Graysmith mentions the lack of information -trading among police departments as an on-going basis. Sharing of information among police departments limits cross information and even serendipity. The September 11 attacks certainly showed that this problem of limiting information among services and across services certainly limits action and response.

The question arose more than one time , and in different police officers and departments that perhaps more than one killer was involved in the Zodiac killings. Perhaps there was more than one killer , perhaps the killers acted in concert , as was shown in the Son of Sam events , perhaps it was a matter of a single original Zodiac who then had copycats – seeking the same fame .

The Zodiac Killer operated in the Northern California area. This was during a 10 month area in the late 1960’s.The Zodiac Killer was never found or apprehended.

How did the Zodiac get his name? Did the Zodiac Killer or the Northern California police coin the term? It turns out that the legend is that the Zodiac coined his name in a series of rather taunting and goading letters he sent to the press ( Bay Area Newspapers and radio stations mainly) , These letters continued to be sent and received to the press until even 1974. The letters of the Zodiac Killer included four codes of the type called “Cryptograms”. Cryptograms are a form of a Cipher type code. One of these four puzzles was solved. The remaining three remain unsolved and undetermined.

The Zodiac murdered five known victims in the Vallejo, Lake Berryessa and San Francisco between December 1968 and December 1969. Another geographic bay area covered by this serial killer was the Bay area “Benicia”/

Three women and four men were targeted. Their targeted ages ranged between 16 and 30. Other people were murdered in a manner similar to the Zodiac Killer. It has never been determined to what extent these were genuine Zodiac Killer victims or copycat events.

In April 2004 the San Francisco Police Department marked the Zodiac Killer case file as “inactive”. This file was reopened by the San Francisco Police at some time before March 2007. The case does remain open in the police departments of some other jurisdictions as well.

The Zodiac did claim in letters to newspapers that he had murdered as many as 37 people.
