Recognized by the Investigators

be recognized by the investigators. The again . . . perhaps the investigators of that period may have lacked the present-day sophistication to have recognized the absence of such items from the scenes.”

But what was there? A pile of recipe cards that had words humorously misspelled, a slip of yellow paper and a Zodiac Sea Wolf Watch the detectives had expected to find. They anticipated clippings on Zodiac; they were there. A serial killer who craved publicity would be compelled to keep cuttings of his newspaper appearances. He not only had videotapes of news programs mentioning Zodiac, but had retained a copy of the return of service of a search warrant Toschi had handed him in 1972. Allen had smiled then, as if he knew a joke that the police did not.

I thought of Lynch’s anonymous tip in 1969. Without that tip, Leigh would not have been a suspect until he spoke freely to the three detectives at the oil refinery. He seemed to want to interact with the police, and enjoyed it when he has finally a suspect. What if Leigh had turned himself in? If not, who had been the tipster?

“I probably hadn’t seen Leigh in twenty-five of thirty years,” Kay Huffman told me later. “I hadn’t kept in touch. I knew he had been down in Atascadero and I knew what for. And that blew me away because I had had no inkling of anything like that. Harold and Leigh had gone to an air show and he brought him home here. There was this little old man. I don’t know what happened to the young vigorous person I knew, but he wasn’t there anymore. Now the diabetes had made him look terrible and aged. I was devastated for days afterward. I couldn’t believe it was the same person.

“My dad was very ill too and so I’d go up to Vallejo to visit him. I usually did that about every other weekend and if Leigh was in, I’d stop by and visit him a little bit. The first time I stopped by, he wanted to tell me about how he had burglar-proofed the house ’cause there had been a break-in. Then he wanted to know if I wanted to see the guns and knives he kept in the basement room his mother built for him. We used to call it ‘The Dungeon.’ I looked at him and said, ‘That isn’t what I came to see. I came to see you.’ And he says, ‘You don’t want to talk about my guns?’ ‘No, I don’t want to talk about them and I dont want to see them ever.’”

For the Last Two Years

FOR THE LAST two years Toschi had been chief of security for the posh Pan-PacificHotel at 500 Post Street. As director of twenty-four-hour security he conducted discreet surveillance of the VIP’s floor and coordinated with their security people–grueling work. “Many times computer companies asked me to meet with their own corporate security manager. . .do a walk-around of the hotel and the rooms where equipment is going to be,” Toschi said. “Times people would call me and I would be so tense and exhausted–missing luggage and missing items from rooms.” And yet, around each bend in the hotel’s labyrinth of corridors, Toschi’s nemesis still lurked. A stone’s throw away Zodiac had flagged down Stine’s cab that long-ago Columbus Day. Toschi recalled the legions of Zodiac suspects. Had there ever been a greater mystery? The legend grew. A new generation became obsessed.

As if he had never vanished, Zodiac turned up later as fodder for television dramas. One day location directors for the Nash Bridges television program arrived unexpectedly from Hollywood and checked into the Pan-Pacific. As Toschi inspected their five rooms, one asked him, “Are you familiar with the Zodiac killer story? That’s our next project.” He laughed, knowing how many years he had spent hunting Zodiac. “What was it like to be on the hunt for a serial killer?” they asked, and so he told them. When Toschi saw the completed show, he said, “At least they didn’t make me a nut. I even got o save the life of Nash Bridges [Don Johnson] through the character of his former mentor. The plot is that Bridges hears his mentor in homicide, Dale Cutter, a retired inspector, is having family problems. After many years, he goes hunting for Zodiac again. The drama ends with the real Zodiac still alive and making a call to Bridges.”

Unsolved Mysteries would profile Zodiac, and the Fox Net-

Colored affair streaked

colored affair streaked with rust in places. “It was a standard trailer,” said Toschi. Tapered concrete blocks supported the off-wheels trailer. A locked shed adjoined it. What the detectives didn’t know was that Allen had recently repaneled the interior of one of his trailers, possibly this one, maybe the one in Bodega. Was something hidden within those walls? “We kind of moseyed around because we had a search warrant,” said Toschi. The investigators invited themselves in and made a cursory inspection of the trailer. It had an acrid smell like the refinery. Toschi indicates a map of Lake Berryessa taped to the wall. Zodiac had attacked a couple there.
Bob Dagitz had been excited about Allen as a suspect as soon as he heard Allen was familiar with Berryessa and the outskirts of Vallejo. He knew Leigh was ambidextrous, good with a bow and arrow, and proficient with various weapons. Tocshi thought that Allen fulfilled everything he thought Zodiac should be. He moved Allen’s bed away from the wall and discovered the largest jar of Vaseline he had ever seen. Sadomasochistic pornography was stacked in a box, and male blow-up dolls were in the trailer. Books on chemistry and biology were everywhere, many stamped with Allen’s name. Some bloodstained clothing littered a table. But they knew Allen was a hunter. Toschi pushed the bed back into place and entered the small unkempt kitchen. He pried open the freezer. Little animal hearts, livers, and mutilated rodent bodies were inside.
Though no real sex was involved in Zodiac’s assaults, technically he was a sexual psychopath or, more accurately, a sexual sadist. Stanford’s Dr. Donald T. Lunde told me that sexual sadists commonly acted out sadistic impulses in their early teens–torturing and killing cats, dogs, and other small animals. “He tortures and kills substitute victims, small animals,” he said. “There certainly is the need to kill. . .something at certain intervals.” Lunde believed that in adulthood, such an individual, if it were made very difficult for him to kill humans, might revert to killing animals. “It would be better than nothing,” he said.
“The sociopathic murder usually has a physically cruel, rejecting father and perhaps a hysterical, seductive mother,” Dr. Manfred Guttmacher reported in The Mind of the Murderer. “The effects of cruelty on the small child are more than simple neglect. In retaliation, the sociopath inflicts cruelty on others and

No Guilt

feels no guilt in doing so. The earliest objects of his cruelty are often animals.”
Though Allen was working toward a degree in biology, he hadn’t yet requested permission from the state of dissect and experiment on small animals. He would file an application for a scientific collecting permit with the Resources Agency of the California Department of Fish and Game. “I intend to collect the following species,” Allen would write, “chipmunks–number in-definite. I expect to collect the following localities: Marine County, Sonoma County and Mendocino County, (Possibly Solano, Napa and Lassen). I desire to collect by the following methods:Live traps (Havahart & home made).” He was under the sponsorship of Dr. John D. Hopkirk, an associate professor biology of Sonoma State College, where Allen majored in biological sciences and minored in chemistry.
Forty-five minutes after racing off, Allen returned. They heard his old clunker approaching, and were outside to meet him as he parked. A cloud of dust arose, “It was nice seeing Allen drive up and really introducing ourselves,” Toschi said later. “Both of us said, ‘Leigh, how are you–we’re San Francisco police inspectors.’ His car was dirty. Through the dirty rear window see clothes, papers and books in the backseat. He was frightened when he showed up because he had never had two detectives actually talking to him with a warrant in hand and we took him by surprise–the first he had met two cops who meant business, face to face, inches away, and he didn’t know if we were going to arrest him.” Because Leigh was into a lot of other stuff, he wasn’t sure, at first, what had brought the police to his trailer.
The huge chemist crawled out of his car.
“What’s all this about?” he said coolly.
Allen didn’t recall Toschi and Armstrong from their visit to the refinery a year a go. He should have remembered, or might have been shamming.
Allen explained he taught Zodiac had been arrested. “Besides, I live in Vallejo,” he added, “and I’ve already talked to Vallejo P.D.”
“We know,” Toschi said, “Here’s your copy of the warrant.”
“Well, help yourself,” conceded Allen with a shrug.

two.” The thought of some sort of Zodiac confederate was never far from my mind. I had noticed the odd spacing in the Zodiac letters: “He plung ed him self. . . wand ering.” It reminded me not only of sign painters who did one letter at a time, but someone talking dictation, writing each syllableas they came, stringing them together like a cars on a train and with no regard to sense.

BILL Armstrong retired from the SFPD. “I could feel the fire had gone away,” Toschi said of his partner. “I remember, when he left Homicide in late’75, he told me, ‘Toschi, I’ve stood over my last body.’ However, the fire was still burning inside me.” The same day Allen begrudgingly began seeing a mental health professional.
As a condition of his release from Atascadero, Leigh had been required to see Dr. Thomas Rykoff, a Santa Rosa psychiatrist. Prior to their first meeting, Leigh, as he had in prison, probably combed the library. In the 1960s he asked Cheney, “Are there books on how to disguise your handprinting and change your appearance?” Cheney said, “I’m sure they exist.” It made sense he would now bone up on proper responses to psychiatric tests. Under present law, a fragmented man such as Zodiac could not be considered legally insane. Dividing”sane” fro m “insane” becomes difficult with “murderers who seem rational, coherent, and controlled,” wrote Dr. Joseph Satten, “and yet whose homicidal acts have a bizarre, apparently senseless quality.”
Unlike schizophrenics, a sexual sadist such as Zodiac “does not exhibit obvious aberrations, but takes considerable pains to appear normal and avoid capture. Of all murderers, he is most likely to repeat his crime.” After the first killing, these intelligent killers become amazingly proficient at concealing themselves throw suspicion upon eventually becomes the principal motive for the

Victim at Lake Berryssa

ing victim at Lake Berryessa had characterized Zodiac’s voice as “like that of a student. . . with some kind of drawl, but not a Southern drawl.” Andrews admitted that though his own voice was moderate in sound, “that is, not high- or low-pitched, I have something of a gift of mimicry –I can imitate W.C. Fields and have done both male and female voices on the radio–and I just enjoy what a pompous ass I am. . . .I may look OK on the out-side, but inside. . .”
While Vaughn, the organist, pumped on a mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ (Zodiac had mentioned the “piano-oginast” on his “little list” of potential victims). Narlow and Avery’s interesting find became the projectionist. After the double feature they ripped down a handprinted felt-tip-pen poster advertising “The Big Parade with John Gilbert and Renee Adoree.” Someone at the theater drew them of the constantly changing bills. I retrieved another from the gutter and took it to Morrill in Sacramento. He studied the handprinting. “With the exemption of the three-stroke K it’s a good match,” he said, beaming. “That’s the closest Zodiac lettering I’ve seen!” Not only might the theater’s discarded posters have provided Zodiac with his alphabet of printed letters, but the Academy Standard leader on each strip of film was fittingly a crossed circle.

I drove over the Golden Gate Bridge toward Santa Rosa in a steady downpour. I stopped along the way and parked amongst he gray warehouses where the theater manager had once kept his warren of connected apartments. The building had been redone and repainted, the old line of mailboxes in the courtyard taken down, and his gadget-cluttered rooms (movie equipment, theater seats, rows of 35-mm monochrome film-processing machines) emptied. Time was marching on and Zodiac was no closer to being caught than a decade ago.
Leigh was nowhere around his trailer when I got there. Eighteen days earlier he had ceased installing home security devices and quit his job as a senior-citizen aide in Vallejo. “Could Narlow and Avery’s suspect and Leigh be working together?” a policeman suggested to me. “Check out the possibility, however remote, that there is a connection between the

Crimes

crimes. Behind a smiling, secretive facade, he feels vastly inferior, hostile, anxious, and persecuted. Yet that perverse urge to call attention to himself as Zodiac is an itch almost impossible not to scratch. Or was Leigh’s secret that he only thought he was Zodiac?

No one knows what creates a compulsive killer -a missing sex chromosomes?-an event during the first six months of life? Whatever the cause, the condition is incurable. Cruel, rejecting parents and peers create pressures expressed in childhood by bed-wetting, shoplifting, and animal torture. With the awakening of puberty, the anger manifest itself in ever-increasing and cleverly concealed acts of sadism. Sheriff Striepeke’s privately commissioned psychological profile stated Zodiac was a white, unmarried man under thirty-five years old “who tortured animals, had a passive father and dominant mother, and may have have spent time in a mental institution.” Meanwhile, Leigh Allen continued to daydream in his trailer and basement. Dwelling in an escapist world of science fiction and the occult, arrogantly intolerant of people, he tended to set his own rules. “I’ve been able to personally study several of these [serial killers] very closely,” Dr Lunde told me. “Bianchi’s responses on psychological tests are almost verbatim like Kemper’s. The whole sort of thing of seeing animals torn a part and blood and animal hearts.”

A psychologist working under conditions of Allen’s parole evaluated Rykoff’s tests and findings. When he gave the suspect a projective test, a Rorschach (ink blot) test, Rykoff was warned to look for answer beginning with the letter z. “The odds of to look for answer beginning with z are very remote,” the analyst told detectives before the Rorschach test. “I don’t expect any.” The first two mirror images Leigh was shown reminded him of “a zygomatic arch.” The analyst was shaken by tis. He went on. “What do you see in this?” At the end of the tests, he found that Allen had given five z responses, far outside the norm. Cabdriver Paul Stine had been wounded in the zygomatic arch by Zodiac.

A doctor’s report on Leigh had said, “He’s potentially violent, he is dangerous,” and “he is capable of killing.” The same analyst thought Allen had “five separate personalities.” Split personalities would explain how he passed a lie-detector test; why his handprinting did not match Zodiac’s. The psychiatrists conclu-

Leigh Allen

sions were mounting: Leigh “is extremely dangerous and is a sociopath…is highly intelligent and incapable of functioning with women in a normal way…has a potential for danger.” In their private sessions, Dr. Rykoff discovered the violent side of his new patient’s nature. Any kind of accusation set him off. The subject of his mother or prison enraged him. Leigh became defensive, shaking with anger until he regained control, then became sarcastic. His remarks, icy, though witty, were packed with puns and double meanings. Immature, self-centered, with a strong ego, he had a taunting way of speaking, but was capable of great personal charm. When Allen spoke of Zodiac, he felt persecuted. Worst of all, he cried -long heartrending moans. Between sobs, Dr. Rykoff felt Allen was “repressing very deep hatred.” But on another level Leigh aced every perception test from blocks to puzzles. “This guy can look at something, figure it out in a matter of minutes, and do it with the least amount of energy and effort,” one expert ha said. ” And he laughed at other people for stumbling through the same task.” Allen took his psychiatric test under duress and always in the same manner. ” He would not smile or slow emotion and would speak in a low measured monotone.” Allen’s parole officer, Bruce Pelle, came to know this menacing, focused monotone well.
Rykoff’s sessions with Allen were conducted as a favor to Lieutenant Jim Husted of the Vallejo P.D. and Pelle. Rykoff was in the middle of studying Leigh when a new patient was signed on -a young woman. She desired to be hypnotized as part of a training program for a social rehabilitation group she was Leigh Allen’s sister-in-law, Karen. Whether or not the police suggested Karen see the same therapist as her brother-in-law is open the speculation. But Husted, head of the Intelligence Unit, was wily. Through his manipulation or not, somehow Karen ended up with Rykoff. During their sessions she remarked about a chemist brother-in-law and his dark side. Rykoff saw the man constantly preyed on her mind. As Karen expounded more of her impressions and suspicions she was sketching seemed familiar.
“He spoke of man as true game,” she said. “Once he and hos brother got in an argument over dinner. He leaped on him and began chocking him.”

Continuous of Talking to Ron and Karen

” We’re very frustrated,’ Karen told me. ‘ We just don’t know how serious Vallejo took us. I know there are a lot of leads coming in. We just decided to call you because we were seeing you name and Inspectors Armstrong’s name in the papers.’ ‘ Because of the letters to the Chronicle and the media coverage,’ I told them. ‘ We’re getting it all. We sure would like to spread it around a little more.’ That got a little chuckle from both Ron and Karen. ‘ When we get a call we take it seriously,’ I told them. ‘ We just decided, you took the time to call, we’ll take the information now and notify the detective from that jurisdiction, see what he know and maybe it will ring a bell.

” I noticed that Ron was speaking with even more emotion than earlier. It was as if a little frustration had entered Ron and his wife since they saw nothing more was coming from the Vallejo investigation. Ron and Karen told us that Leigh had spend time in Southern California and was familiar with the area, but they weren’t too sure exactly what he was doing because he was on his own a lot.

” As we progressed we learned about the school in Sonoma and that he had a trailer up there. ‘ Leigh has a couple of old junkers, old beat-up cars, ‘ Ron told us. ‘He’s what you would call a professional student.’ Allen’s sister-in-law told us that the suspect was now residing alone in a house trailer in Santa Rosa part of the week [Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays]. Apparently this is where he kept all his personal property. We were very careful to see the chief of inspectors when we came back, to keep him apprised of every move we made. ‘ Keep working on it,’ Barca said.

“Next morning, I went in to see Walter Guibbini. We knew we needed more but we had to fill in the number-two man in the D.A.’s office. All the fingerprinting  had been negative and the handprinting of Arthur Leigh Allen had according to Mulanax and Lundblad, been negative, but the chief assistant sat straight up as we told him  what the Allen had related. ‘ We’re pretty excited about it,’ I said.

” ‘I wonder why Vallejo didn’t call you guys,’ said Guibbini, ‘and tell you everything about this Arthur Leigh Allen.’

” ‘We’re  giving them everything we’ve got Walter, so we can get closure on this. Do we have enough for a search warrant?’

” ‘ Frankly, you don’t. Unless you get more physical evidence,
