Zodiac unmasked

6 feet tall, 240-plus pounds, and about thirty five. Hine’s suspects was three inches shorter, ninety pounds lighter, and twelve years older.
Was there a connection between Lass and someone from Riverside? The theory was that Zodiac had been a former kidney dialysis patient of Donna’s when she worked at Riverside’s Cottage Hospital. Her roommate, Jo Anne Goettsche (Get-She), had also been a dialysis nurse since 1975. “Donna had never told me about any such person,” she old me. “Her family, though, askedme the same question. We worked on the same surgical ward at Letterman General Hospital in the Presidio [where Zodiac had been last seen] and several corpsmen there were giving flying lessons over in Hayward. We used to go flying with two men from Riverside in 1970.”
“Where was this?”
“Oh right here in San Francisco.”
“San Francisco?” Mulanax had told me that Darlene Ferrin had also gone flying with two men, but he’d never checked them out. Leigh Allen flew. “I don’t know if I can remember their names,” Jo Anne said “Donna was here in San Francisco from February to June 1970. She moved to Lake Tahoe to work and three months later vanished. Donna was kind of naive, and not very experienced with men. She was easily drawn away. She was hooked on gambling. That’s why she went up there. She liked to ski and liked to gamble, so she took the job in the casino hotel [the Sahara Hotel, Stateline, Nevada] as a first-aid emergency nurse. I went up alone to meet her over the weekend, having talked to her earlier in the week. She had moved to a new apartment, so that’s why we were meeting at the hotel on Saturday night. That was the first day she had the apartment and I didn’t have the phone number. I was supposed to meet her when she was getting off work, and she would show me where she lived. She was nowhere to be found so I stayed in a motel overnight and then looked some more. I didn’t know what to do. It wasn’t like her to just not show up. When I came back to the city Sunday night without finding out anything, I don’t know why I didn’t call the police. I was young I guess.”
Donna’s older sister, Mary, told me, “Donna was always people’s favorite nurse. She used her credit card on Saturday [September 5, 1970] and went to work that night. She worked from six at night to two in the morning. She was writing the log of day.

Zodiac suspects

Other policemen besides Toschi and Narlow had cherished suspects. Highway Patrolman Lyndon Lafferty pegged Zodiac as a resident of Fairfield,a town of east Vallejo. Since December of 1969, a Fairfield copycat had been dispatching typed letters to the chronicle:

“This is the Zodiac speaking I just need help I will kill again so except it any time now the [next] will be a cop…”

Two days later he wrote again, enclosing a drawing of a knife titled “The Bleeding knife of Zodiac,” Page fifty-nine of an astrology book, Day-by-Day Forecast for Cancer and a horoscope forecast for Le. “I just need help I will kill again…I just want to tell you this state is in trouble…” he wrote.

Harvey Hines, a former Escalon, California, police officer, believed he had found Zodiac. In November 1973, while taking night-school criminology in Sonora, he stumbled across reports of a flirtatious man who approached two South Lake Tahoe women in 1971. A year earlier, possible Zodiac victim Donna Lass had disappeared from there. Intrigued, Hines inquired at the hotel where she worked as urse and came up with a suspect who had studied basic codes at who had studied basic codes at radio school. He had been arrested multiple times since 1946, and in 1969 lived near where Paul Stine had picked up Zodiac. Hines later told Hard Copy, “My suspect is the Zodiac. Every fiber, every part of my being tells me he is the Zodiac Killer.” A televised clip showed a pair of slipper clad feet–the suspect retrieving his morning paper. “Hines been chasing this guy through Vegas casinos with a video camera,” a cop told me, “screaming, ‘He’s the Zodiac!’ ” But Zodiac

Zodiac unmasked

Allen remained the best suspect. Outside of his admission that he had been in Riverside, police had ferreted out no concrete evidence of his presence in Southern California where Zodiac claimed to have killed others. “Leigh’s Family had told us something about Leigh being around the Riverside area in the middle or late sixties,” said Toschi. “I was surprised that [Vallejo Lieutenant Jim] husted said, ‘Forget about Riverside because we can’t place Leigh Allen in the area.’ Of course, yes, he was there. Allen’s own family had told us that he had spent time in the Riverside area and was familiar with Southern California, but they weren’t too sure exactly what he was doing because he was on his own a lot.”
“Leigh stayed with families down south before and after Atascadero,” I told Toschi. He worked in the area, often drove to Riverside on weekends for car racers, and later he flew a plane there. On Monday, Mulanax confirmed Allen was at Riverside City College in 1966 when the murder occured.”
Toschi sighed. “We were the first one to apprise Mulanax of Leigh, very, very briefly, when the family first came to us,” he said. “They had already scanned Leigh very briefly. Mulanax’s eyes really popped. He actually thought we had him. To this day we still may. Mulanax liked Allen very, very much. Jack was so high on Allen in those days we were working with him. He said he had never come across a better-looking suspect. That’s the way I felt also. We left Allen’s file in our metal file cabinet, two manilla four-inch envelopes of material on Allen, and we just put it away with much regret. We just didn’t know where to go. Jack says he has an inch-and-a-half file at his house. Could it be he has information that never got into the file at Vallejo? It’s a bit frustrating to realize that we had put his folder back in our files.” Allen’s indelible presence tracked all over the south-in Pomona, Hemet, Torrance, San Bernardino, Paso Robles, Riverside, and San Luis Obispo. Police had no substantial evidence that he was left-handed.

ZODIAC UNMASKED

TUESDAY, AUGUST 30, 1977

LEIGH had spent a total of 150 days in the Sonoma County Jail. Between there and Atascadero he had been behind bars for two years, four-months , and twenty-five days. During all that time not one offense attributable to Zodiac had been committed. The attacks in Santa Rosa had ceased; no new bodies were discarded below Franz Valley Road; no genuine letters from Zodiac had been received. Even as late as this nine hundredth day of Leigh’s captivity, a note-a sentence-a single word post-marked from outside Atascadero would have removed Allen from the suspect list. But Zodiac’s letter had been received three full years before July 8, 1974.

In the afternoon, a Sonoma Country Sheriff’s Department deputy ushered Leigh downstairs. Their heels echoed in the long impersonal hallways. The deputy arranged white plastic numerals, #4-7-9-3-2, below Leigh’s face for an I.D. mug shot. He was garbed in prison clothes, his mustache and goatee now showing gray. His expression was scowling, through the next day he was to be a free man. A friend of mine saw a different expression in the same photo. “I think he looks sad,” she said.

ROBERT GRAYSMITH

Fered to help you catch Zodiac? With his disdain of the police, Zodiac would irresistibly drawn to offer to catch himself.”

“Only one,” he said.
“Yes I bet it was typed.”
“Yes, it was. It just arrived.”

He searched his desk. A bright shaft of light cut through the grimy window. Traffic crawled slugishly along Bryant Street. The old sign flashed its red neon in bright sunlight, “OK BAIL BONDS-OPEN 24 HOURS-WE SPECIALIZED IN TRAFFIC.”

Toschi found the letter and read aloud: “If I can ever be of any help to you just let me know. I’m sorry I wasn’t your man , but I’m out now and I’ve paid my debt to society. [signed] Leigh Allen.”

“Sorry I wasn’t your man!’ ” said Toschi in wonderment. A note like this, with its mocking tone, was exactly the kind of letter Zodiac would write. ” He’s the one,” I said.

Back at the Chronicle, a sick unpostmarked letter signed with a Zodiac symbol arrived that afternoon. Even crank letters like Old Tom’s were treated seriously. Actually, any Zodiac letter, no matter how obvious a hoax, always created a stir.

No possibility could be dismissed. Police lavished attention on each because Zodiac’s handprinting may have changed over the years.

” ILL DO IT BECAUSE I DONE IT 21 TIMES I CANT STOP BECAUSE EACH THAT I KILL MAKES IT WORSE AND I MUST KILL MORE MAN IS THE MOST PRIZED GAME ILL NERVER GIVE MY NAME. . . .”

What perversity drove anyone to copy Zodiac? Future copycats had darker motives and bloodier hands . They went further than imitating writing-they acted on the Zodiac crimes themselves.

ALLEN returned to Vallejo. Water town had changed little-lying clean, sprawling, and mysterious as always. Robert Louis Stevenson once said, “Vallejo’s typical of many small California towns-a blunder.”First thing, Leigh applied as a fleet mechanic to Benicia Import Auto Service.

He was honest about his past. “I served two years and a half at Atascadero,” he admitted. After they hired him at $6.15 an hour , he roved the hills trying out his.

The car. Racing along the road’s edge, she fell. “I’m not going to kill you,” he shouted as she scrambled to her feet.

“If I wanted to kill you, I could just hit you in the head with this piece of wood.” She returned to the car, but instantly his hands closed around her throat. “Now if I wanted to kill you, I could just snap your neck,” he said. “Shall I kill you now, or are you going to take off your clothes?”

As he grabbed her sweatshirt, she wriggled free and bolted into the woods. The stranger gave up searching for her and roared off with her her purse and books.

Sobbing, covered with scratches and burrs, she staggered to the High grove area. When police responded, she described the suspect as “thirty-five, five feet nine inches tall with a chunky, protruding stomach. ” Later descriptions of Zodiac mentioned ” a slight potbelly” and that his “stomach hung over his trousers.”

Bate’s killer (or someone pretending to be her murderer) mailed two unstamped letters from a rural mailbox to the police and riverside
Press-Enterprise. The typed confession letter, repeating what he and Cheri Jo had spoken to each other in the dark, were blurry fourth-and
seventh-generation carbon copies.

The original was never mailed, making a match to a specific typewriter difficult. The writer had used a portable Royal typewriter, Elite-type, Canterbury shaded. Leigh’s mother had given him just such a portable. The length of the paper was unknown since the author had torn off the bottom and top of a strip of Teletype paper. Oddly, he had folded back both bottom corners.

The writer claimed to have phoned the Press-Enterprise, but probably did not. Some of the language was Zodiac-like. “I AM NOT SICK. I AM INSANE. BUT THAT WILL NOT STOP THE GAME.” Zodiac wrote: “why spoil our game!”

scratches on his face, but Allen said he was in Pomona when he heard Cheri Jo Bates was killed. He had served as a painter in the Navy. That might explain paint specks on the base exchange Timex, but that was a long time ago.

“I was at the Riverside City College library the night Cheri Bates was murdered,” an RCC student told me, “I had the same kind of car that she had and I was parked i front of her. I normally left the library when it closed, as she did, but I left earlier that night.

That point is that I always felt [the victim] could have been because of the timing and that I must been in the library with him that night. Bates was a cheerleader and my best friend.”

A transient, with the knife in his possession, was discovered sleeping in his nearby car, questioned, released. A local mother found a kitchen knife missing and told police she suspected her son might be the killer. After questioning Cher Jo’s friends, police turned a questioning a fifteen military men from the nearby air base.

Fourteen days after Bates murder, River-side police, under command to “drop everything and work this case until solved!” ordered the the sixty-two students, two librarians, and one custodian who had been at the library that fatal night to return for a reconstruction. “Wear the same clothes you did two weeks ago.”

What vehicle did you notice parked in front of you?” asked Brown. “A ’47-’52 tan-gray Studebaker with oxidized paint,” came one answer. After the initial interview, each student was given a card with an assigned letter and checked off personally by Captain Irvin Cross, head of the detective bureau, as they completed reenactment. Zodiac Unmasked

He said, “My car is over in the parking lot. Come on, I’ll give you a lift.” She left books on the seat and keys still in the ignition.

Did she know the man, or had he forced her to accompany him?

The unlit gravel road to the parking lot was long, dark, and silent. The pair walked approximately two hundred feet away and paused in a dirt driveway midway between two vacant frame houses at 3680 and 3692 Terracina.

Their conversation was later detailed in a type”confession letter” sent to the police. “It’s about time he said “About time for what?” she asked. “It’s about time for you to die.” A knife was in his hand.

Between 10:15 and 10:45 P.M a female neighbor heard an “awful scream.” At 10:30 another heard “two screams.” After a couple of minutes of silence, an old car started up. In that time the killer, trailing drops of blood, had gone back to search for something he had dropped.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1966

A groundskeeper discovered Cheri Jo at 6:28 A.M From the two-forty stab wounds, estimates were the knife blade was approximately three and one-half inches long and one and one-half inch wide.

The motive was mystifying-she was clothed and had not been sexually attacked or robbed. During a ferocious, earth-churning battle, Bates had scratched her killer’s face and ripped a pain-spattered Timex watch from his wrist. The black band, broken away from one side of the watch face, measured seven inches in circumference. The Timex had been purchased at a military base exchange. The B.F Goodrich heel prints found near Bate’s body indicated a size 8-to-10 Wing Walker-like shoe manufactured for the military by Leavenworth prisoners and sold by military exchanges. Just outside Riverside city limits lay March Air Force Base, a SAC base. A number of greasy finger and palm prints were discovered on the left door of the victim’s car.

Four workmen had been seen across the street from where Bate’s car was parked on Terracina. The prints were sent to Washington and the Timex to Cl&I.

At 8:30 A.M Leigh Allen called in sick. For the first time, he missed a day of work at Valley Springs School. The next day, he filled out an absence form and signed it. No one recalled.

Seda’s Zodiac Confession

The interrogator finally got what he was after. His eyes were ablaze with excitement. After a grueling six hours of interrogation, Seda, the suspect, finally signed a statement admitting to all nine counts of Zodiac Attacks. The confession mentioned that it was the urges that drove him to attack randomly. It was only by some chance that he’d get to know his victim’s astrological signs. He said that his intention was to strike fear in the city.

Detectives were surprised to know that the Zodiac doesn’t live alone. They’ve always figured that if he was with someone, that someone’s going surface soon and reveal Zodiac’s identity. But it had always been secret to both of them.

It was only thru ballistics and saliva tests that linked Seda to the crimes. There was an envelope that Seda licked. Seda claimed to have stopped shooting in 1994 because he had lost the urge.
On June 24, 1998, jury’s deliberation ended in a conviction of three counts of murder and one count attempted murder. A month later, Judge Robert J. Hanophy ruled an 83 years imprisonment for the New York Zodiac.

Unknown to many that in the fog-shrouded San Francisco, a third copycat was yet to come. This time the Zodiac III’s murder is going to outdo the terrifying murders of its previous copy.
