Its an amazing fact – that those who conduct heinous crimes – whether it be the “Tylenol Capsule” Murders / Poisonings , bank robbers or the “Unabomber” seem to have great need for publicity and noteworthy. Often when they are “caught” or get themselves caught , as their tale is now big and public enough the first things they ask the police for are the media reports of their pursuits and travails. Its an amazing fact of human intuition and longings to be :”part of the group” or to recognized by the group with fame and notoriety.
What is the answer to this ? Is it not to publicize these killer’s actions and events ? Its not only a question of what sells in the media - increases newspaper circulation and circulation numbers , and as well sells ads and advertising revenues.
Its not only “selling soap”. In the case of the unabomber it was his own seeking of fame that did him in. The unabomber evaded capture as he “lived under the radar”. He had no bank account , phone or charge card. He had no utility bills. He was an unknown in our technological society with all its inherent forms of tracking – both official and unofficial.
Yet the unibomber did himself in by the quest for fame – human ego. He demanded that that none other than the prestigious New York Times publish his writing his “manifesto”. There was a lot of discussion of the time of the ethics of this by the Post and its fall into allowing itself unwittingly to allow it to blackmailed. Some suspected it was an opportunity for the paper to increase its circulation and ad revenues . To have a “scoop”.
Yet the ruse worked. On reading the ramblings the villain’s own brother recognized the ramblings as being that of his brother , notified the F.B.I. resulting in the capture , conviction and incarceration of the unimbomber character.
